Travelers today want much more than relaxation or simple entertainment. They’re looking for something deeper, something that stays with them long after their bags are unpacked. People now seek authentic encounters, genuine connections, and experiences that create lasting memories. This shift is especially important for businesses in hospitality and tourism, where meaningful travel experiences are quickly becoming essential rather than optional.
Under my supervision at Rotterdam School of Management, recent research conducted by Loredana Pasquini has shed light on precisely how meaningful travel experiences significantly enhance guest satisfaction and inspire travelers to engage more actively in sustainability initiatives, such as wildlife conservation and community support. Our findings highlight five key elements that create truly meaningful travel experiences: human connection, emotional connection, environmental setting, authentic local experiences, and novelty.

Mindful travelers consciously savor their journey, reflecting more deeply on the beauty and significance of their surroundings. This mindfulness fosters a sense of personal responsibility toward sustainability, prompting active participation in conservation efforts.
Practical Implications for Hospitality Providers
For hospitality providers, particularly those managing safari lodges (the context of our study) and experience-focused tourism businesses, the findings offer practical and actionable strategies. At the heart of your operations should be the intentional creation of meaningful travel experiences, directly enhancing guest satisfaction and inspiring deeper commitment to sustainability.
In practice, this could mean designing safari experiences that go beyond typical wildlife viewing by including community-led activities, such as authentic cooking classes with locals or guided visits to local artisan workshops.
